The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity.

Research shows that compared to girls, boys in the U.S. are more likely to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications, fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime, and/or take their own lives.

Persuaded by the media, peer groups, and some adults in their lives, boys and young men confront an overwhelming pressure to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic relationships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues that boys and young men must navigate in order to become “real men.”
Following the film Dr. Joseph Marshall, Co-founder and Executive Director of Alive & Free and The Prescription to End Violence, will lead a discussion on what is being done around this issue at the ground-level here in the Bay Area as well as what is happening nation-wide at our schools and universities. Dr. Marshall’s perspective on youth violence is featured in the film alongside the work of psychologist and researcher Dr. Judy Chu and youth educator Ashanti Branch.
