Play Dates

African Harvest Celebrations

I want to thank everyone that participated in our first event if the year. We had a great turn out with schools represented from Oakland, San Francisco and the Peninsula. We had students from Pre-K to 5th grade. Thank you to Tian-Qian Laoshi for an incredible job with the Mandarin Instruction.

The children learned about the Yam Festival in Ghana and Nigeria. We discussed why cultures have celebrated harvests. The children made crafts and reviewed Chinese vocabulary for corn, drums, yams, Africa and harvest.

In celebrating our culture the children all gave thanks ” Ashe” for our symbolic harvest.

The children created kente cloth patterns.

We ended the event with Alexandra (grade 5) reading to the younger children in Mandarin!!!

It was a wonderful event.

Our next trip will be to the pumpkin patch and we are looking at ways to update our lesson plans to include what we learned from today.

A few changes you can expect
– the older children will practice reading and writing Chinese characters.
– the older children will read a story to the younger children.
– we will break into smaller age appropriate groups to encourage older youths to participate.
– we will have 60 min of Mandarin led play.

We are continuously seeking Mandarin Instructors, older youth participants, and increased parent involvement.

Thanks for such a great showing and wonderful feedback at the end. Stay posted for more information to come.

Have a great weekend.

Play Date: Saturday (12/10)

Play Date: Saturday, December 10 (2pm-4pm)

Location: Berkeley Aquatic Park

PAASSC parents are getting excited about the various outreach efforts at their school for the 2012 academic year. If you are interested in enrolling your child into a Mandarin Immersion program in the Fall now is the time to tour the school sites, submit your applications and to speak with other parents. Dawn Williams (a parent at Yu Ming) has offered to host the next PAASSC play date at the “Dream Land” playground at the Berkeley Aquatic Park. This will be a great event for families to reconnect, to meet new families pursuing a bilingual education for their child and for prospective families to feel free to come out and learn more.

While PAASSC does not encourage enrollment at any specific Mandarin Immersion school we are excited that the parents at Yu Ming are organizing this play date.

A Great Play Date

We had another great play date!!

This time we are excited to announce a new addition to our team. Ms. XinFeng Lin brought an array of educational and fun Chinese games for the children to play. The children enjoyed the games that engaged skills in multiple areas – parachute games, chasing games, story time, flash cards and tasty treats that were earned throughout the day. Ms. XinFeng Lin helped to take our play dates to the next level and for that we are truly appreciative.

Park Play Date – 06/18/2011
