National Chinese Language Conference

I am very excited to announce that PAASSC will be presenting at the 5th annual National Chinese Language Conference. This year’s conference will take place in Washington DC from April 12 – 14, 2012. I had no idea what an amazing event this would be and I can’t stop beaming as I am so excited that PAASSC will be participating in such an amazing conference.

They already have confirmed 60 expert-led sessions with additional less formal sessions that will also take place. I can’t stop saying how excited I am about this conference. The focus of the conference is examining the State of the Field: Proficiency, Sustainability and Beyond. Topics include Engaging Learners through Meaningful Play; Innovative Classroom Management Techniques; Structuring Emotion Filled Chinese Learning Experiences; Integrating Chinese Language into Math Curriculum; and my favorite Urban Elementary Mandarin: A Triangulated Design for Successful Implementation and Sustainability.

I had no idea! These are the concerns that most African American parents have raised – limited opportunities for movement in the classroom, more creative and supportive forms of discipline and/or classroom management, and just the prospects of having a discussion at this conference about children in urban communities has me pretty excited. I have to be honest. I am also very excited to have the pleasure of meeting Dr. Roger Harris.

Dr. Harris is a 37-year veteran of public schools in Boston and the 2001 Massachusetts Principal of the Year and recipient of the 2001 U.S. Department of Education’s National Distinguished Principal Award. He is the Head of School at Boston Renaissance. Boston Renaissance is a PreK-6 elementary charter and full-service school that coordinates an array of programs to attack the root causes of academic failure and create an integrated approach to learning – similar to the “Harlem Children’s Zone”. The school recently introduced a Mandarin Chinese Language and Culture program. To get right to the point the students at Boston Renaissance have eliminated the Achievement Gap and that is the story all of us need to hear more about. In 2010, 71% of the third graders scored “Advanced” or “Proficient” in English language compared with just 45% in 2006. In math, 73% were “Advanced” or “Proficient” compared with just 36% in 2006. Renaissance’s student population is 96% African-American and Latino. More than three-quarters of its students come from low-income families, and more than 20% come from families whose first language is not English. In addition to the incredible academic strides the school has made, their choir was invited to sing before the President and First Lady this past December. These children have so much to be proud of and I can’t wait to take notes during his presentation.

Stay tuned for more information regarding the upcoming conference. Early bird registration has been extended to February 15th so sign up now if you are going.

Play Date: Saturday (12/10)

Play Date: Saturday, December 10 (2pm-4pm)

Location: Berkeley Aquatic Park

PAASSC parents are getting excited about the various outreach efforts at their school for the 2012 academic year. If you are interested in enrolling your child into a Mandarin Immersion program in the Fall now is the time to tour the school sites, submit your applications and to speak with other parents. Dawn Williams (a parent at Yu Ming) has offered to host the next PAASSC play date at the “Dream Land” playground at the Berkeley Aquatic Park. This will be a great event for families to reconnect, to meet new families pursuing a bilingual education for their child and for prospective families to feel free to come out and learn more.

While PAASSC does not encourage enrollment at any specific Mandarin Immersion school we are excited that the parents at Yu Ming are organizing this play date.

PAASSC Founder goes International

Well…

The video below was really recorded before PAASSC was founded (this picture is years before PAASSC also) and I was only interviewed as a parent but it is my television debut as an advocate for Mandarin Immersion programs.

Disclaimer: I am posting this although I am not sure that I agree with the position and general sentiment of the interviewer. This documentary highlights the “shattered dreams” of Americans following the attacks on September 11th and comes to California specifically to see where we are headed in light of our continued economic problems as a state and a nation. I was slightly aware of the interviewers position on this matter but hoped that I would be available to represent the school that my daughter attends and our desires to pursue a language immersion program for our children to a larger audience.

Although this didn’t come across in the interview I want to share why we are raising our daughters to speak Mandarin.

The Decision:

Our initial decision had nothing at all to do with our daughters. We actually made that decision before they were even born. Six years later I signed our three year old up for New Sprouts Chinese School. We participated one 16-week session and then we moved on to a dance class. It was my daughter that kept asking to go back to “Chinese School”. As a parent I have a number of reasons why I think my daughters should learn Mandarin but the reason we are committed to raising bilingual children that speak Chinese is because both girls LOVE the language so much.

Sure, China is predicted to be the super power in 2030 and that sounds like a great reason to raise bilingual children. But this is a blog for parents raising Black children and we all know that there are many more factors that we have to consider when selecting a school for our children. There are strengths and limitations in Chinese Immersion programs for African American children. As parents of Black children we have to continue to engage the school’s administrators, teachers and other parents to ensure that our child is receiving the best experience possible. So while there are numerous benefits to raising bilingual children my daughters are being raised bilingual because they love the language. My daughters leave for school with smiles and return home with smiles and giggles. The site of a butterfly sends them into song (Chinese songs of course). That’s why my children are learning Chinese – because they love Mandarin.

My oldest daughter is the cute little girl in the purple that is super enthusiastic about singing her songs during circle time. (The interview at Shu Ren International School – begins at 25:36).

2nd Disclaimer: The interview was approximately 30 minutes and they have captured less than 3 minutes of our conversation on film so there was a lot that was left out and some editing to highlight their intended focus but the overall presentation of my statements is fair. During my interview I repeated that our pursuit for a Chinese Immersion program was more involved in our daughter’s love for languages and Mandarin specifically than the state of the Chinese economy although they seemed to only use statements I made that referenced China. I guess it took them 30 minutes of videotaping to get me to say what the wanted LOL. I tried.

A Great Play Date

We had another great play date!!

This time we are excited to announce a new addition to our team. Ms. XinFeng Lin brought an array of educational and fun Chinese games for the children to play. The children enjoyed the games that engaged skills in multiple areas – parachute games, chasing games, story time, flash cards and tasty treats that were earned throughout the day. Ms. XinFeng Lin helped to take our play dates to the next level and for that we are truly appreciative.
